hello juhu users! you might be surprised by its sheer existence, but here it is - 0.9.8! I'll give you the details later, for now just enjoy the download:

update: and as promised earlier, here are some details for this release. first things first - this release is not packed with new features and stuff, it is more like a 'making it right' version, which on the one hand fixes a couple of known issues and on the other hand cleans up the code base.
I see it as a prep release for 1.0.0 (which might come with some cool new features), but until then, take it for what it is. having said that, there are two tiny new features - a new theme (the other grey) and clickable location links.

you might ask yourselves why I chose to jump to 0.9.8 (from 0.9.0) for such a minor release. besides the fact, that version numbers are pretty arbitrary in the first place, the 0.0.8 felt right - since it is the first release in 2008! I know - shockingly so...so there is your reason. but for now you kids have fun and I go on pursuing my day job.

update 2: did I mention before, that there is a new application icon? no? well there is - thanks to benjamin a. wendelboe.

the good news first: development continues, the bad news: everything slowed down a little. among other things, I am planning a major ui redesign which does not only take time, but will make the next juhu release leopard only. it's not set in stone yet and of course your opinions do matter! so keep the comments coming!

I found some quiet minutes in my bussy schedule and used them wisely: I put together the next mobile juhu release.

this one not only comes with less bugs, but also with a new feature: in addition to post your most recent safari url, you now can insert the current (music) track too. so go ahead and play with it, you can download the binary for a manual installation right here (282kb). and I hope that in a couple of days the update will also be available via Installer.app (thanks again to Shaun T. Erickson for giving mobile juhu a home on the ste repository).

yapp, your favourite jaiku mac client is now coming to the iphone and the ipod touch.

it is the first release and unfortunately it isn't on any Installer.app repository yet - which means that you'll have to install it manually using the (secure) ftp client of your choice. of course you'll need a jailbroken iphone/ipod to use mobile juhu. if you have one, download the binary from here (283kb), put the file into the iphone/ipod application directory (/Applications) and restart your device. and for all the geeks out there: check out the google code page for the complete source code.

please keep in mind that this is a beta release and has only been tested on my 1.1.1 ipod touch (which is kind of broken due to the fact that I accidentally dropped it...). okay, if you have any questions or need help installing mobile juhu - don't hesitate - just mail me. otherwise have a fun weekend!

a new cat is around, right - it's leopard release day! and this is pretty much what this version of juhu is all about: leopard compatibility. some of you pointed out, that juhu crashes on leopard and I tried to fix what I could and by what I could I mean it runs fine on the last developer seed, but I haven't had the chance to test it with todays release (I hopefully will hold a copy in my hands in about two hours...) so, download it to your fancy leopard machines, and tell me whether it does work... or not. have fun.

wow, that was fast, wasn't it? okay, two reasons: I forgot to patch in one bug fix and some data load routines needed a bit of tweaking. termie from jaiku told me that juhu hammers a bit hard on the servers when fetching images. I hope this release will cut down the image downloads to a minimum and keep our favourite mini-blog site online. ;) sorry for any inconvenience caused - like having to download juhu twice in a day - but hey, it's just a click, or two, or three...

workaround: juhu crashes at launch

some users reported that juhu 0.8.3 (and previous versions for that matter) crashs at launch. up until now this is confirmed only on ppc-based macs, but due to the help of mikka and lloyd I was able to figure out a small workaround which should do the trick until the next release: the crash is produced by the routines that check for newer versions, so turning the update mechanism off should help. in order to do that, just open
~/Library/Preferences/com.somemorecode.juhu.plist and set autoupdate to NO.

well, if the last one took a while, then this one... I know, and I am really sorry about that, but spare time was rare time over the last couple of months. anyway, here it is - the new release - 0.8.3. since the last one wasn't exactly stable based upon some general problems I ran into, I decided to do a little redesigning, so in big parts juhu is a new app - both visually and from a coding standpoint of view. what does that mean? well, it should mean less crashes and a more stable and usable application (and it also explains the quite big jump in the version number). I hope all of you give it a try and at least some give me feedback. thank you.

this one took a while to come around and after all, the changes aren't so big. mostly bug fixing and some minor additions to the ui. the big problem with japanese characters that are not utf-8 encoded and break the whole feed is at least partially fixed - you can still not see non-utf characters, but at least the stream will be parsed and juhu will display it (hopefully). so here is what is new

this one took a little bit longer to come around, because on the one hand my spare time was occupied otherwise and on the other hand cocoa split views didn't want to make friends with me out of the box... nevertheless here it is!

the main work went into something pretty unspectacular - juhu scales now. you can resize the window and make the boxes bigger or smaller. nice, but there is more - sometimes I posted comments as normal posts, or simply mistyped something - going to the jaiku pages only to delete a post... mh, not the best solution, right? so I added a delete feature for posts and comments (trash icon beneath a post), I use quite a lot. besides the always todo bugfixing and some smaller changes within the interface (re-organised icons, etc.), I also added update notifaction - so if there is a newer version, juhu will tell you from now on (to disable that, just go to the preferences and uncheck the box)

enough said, now it's your turn. try it and tell me what you think, what you like, what you don't like or what problems you have using juhu. I'll try to help where I can.

with the latest juhu built the user interface changed quite a bit (take a look below) - the stream list is now bigger and shows not only avatars, but also the title of posts. besides fixing bugs some smaller changes and additions took place, for example you can now click on the latest label in small window mode in order to open a browser window with the actual presence. this new release provides a small interface improvement: thanks to rick juhu now lets you select an icon from a much wider range of icons. I fixed a big memory leak and a hand full of bugs - better behaviour after waking up from sleep mode and overall less crashes (I didn't experienced any at all, but this doesn't mean a lot, right?). when it comes down to the missing icons problem I am not sure if this version fixes it once and for all, some people tell me about icons being there and some tell me the are not. well, on my mac I can't recreate this particular issue, so it's like fishing in the dark... but I hope you let me know. so go ahead and try.

and there it is - a new release. internally a lot changed compared to previous releases, on the outside I made some small additions - like the possibility to start juhu automatically at login (option in the preferences panel). and like announced earlier, catching the latest updates from jaiku won't lock up the user interface anymore. this seems a pretty minor change, but from a coding point of view it involved some serious work. another point on the agenda for this version was fixing some bugs and making the application more stable, hopefully that worked out. for more information just take a look at the release notes.

due to a not so smart design decision in the starting phase of writing juhu, all download requests were synchronously, this meant practically a user interface lock down while an update took place. so if you were typing a message and the update process started, you got interrupted and the beach ball blocked the interface until the download was done. also clicking on the status bar icon while updating wouldn't give you any response (like showing or hiding). I tried to fix this annoying behaviour with this version. however the previous code was kind of really tied to a synchronous request method, so basically large parts of the application had to be rewritten. on the one hand there are a number of positive side effects coming with that: I was able to find and fix some deep down bugs and hopefully make the programm more crash safe, I also could resolve issues regarding missing icons, starting the application and so on and so forth. but on the other hand, I might have created new bugs or recreated already fixed bugs. so please keep your eyes open and let me know what bugs and problems you experience.

I know it is kind of a loop, but I have to thank every single user of juhu - for trying, reporting, letting me know your ideas, commenting and all of that. the development of an application always takes more then the programmers - it is the users that make it work at last. so thanks you all!

some thoughts on commenting.

I am sure you know, that juhu currently does not allow you to post a comment from the application itself. like I mentioned earlier, this lack of functionality is based on the issue of a missing api method to do so. however I am aware of the fact, that there is another way to comment from outside the jaiku pages (like demonstrated by the jaiku windows client jay-q). it involves a somehow little hackish kind of approach - to get a little techie here:

get the actual html page of a post (not the feed or json, but the actual web page)
extract a validation key from this page, which is needed for commenting
doing a plain html post to an undocumented web site interface using the key and appropriate credentials

don't get me wrong, it is absolutely doable, but since it is not an offical way of posting a comment I am not really sure if I should do it this way. for me clicking the link displayed in juhu and typing a comment in the opened up browser window works at least okay right now (please note, that I am more or less a-not-so-many-comments guy. :)). therefore I could wait with adding this feature until the api supports it officially.

but I am not the only juhu user, right? so maybe you have a different opinion and want to let me know what you think. should it be implemented, because after all it is a way to post a comment? or can you wait and use the browser for a little longer?

no one likes the beach ball

Well, the next release was not exactly planned for today, but since the jaiku guys updated their service, juhu 0.4.3 won't work anymore or at least not in the expected way (which is clearly my fault, not jaikus!). need help with juhu?

although juhu is still in early beta stage, I will try to provide basic help on installing and using juhu within the next couple of lines.

1. downloading and installing juhu

after downloading the zip archive and unpacking it, you should see the juhu app icon where ever you extracted it to (you may drag it to your applications folder, but you don't have to). a double click should fire up the program. when running it for the first time, a sheet will be displayed and prompt you to enter your account information. at this point you have to be a bit carefull - you have to enter your normal jaiku screen name but the personal key is not your normal password, but a special key that can be obtained from http://api.jaiku.com. once you have done that, you should be able to send a post and read the public stream. (remark: users of the quicksilver jaiku plugin won't have to enter their account information, since juhu uses the same keychain entry)

2. using and configuring juhu

you can post an update to your presence by entering the text in the provided bubble, adding an icon and a location and hitting the send button.

in the titlebar of the window you find a + (plus) button which toggles between the small and the big view mode, the x (close) button closes the window, but doesn't quit juhu at all. if you click on the statusbar icon, the window will be closed or opened. please note, that when the window is open, but hidden somewhere deep under all the other windows on your screen, you might have to click twice in order to see the juhu window again.

there are to ways to quit juhu: you can go to the preference panel (the tool icon) and use the quit button, or you can simply press command+q on your keyboard.

like mentioned earlier, the tool icon will give you a preference sheet. you can select the stream you want to see (public or contacts), the time between refreshes, whether you want to hear a sound on entrienews or not and the error message behavior there. if you like to check your account information (screen name and personal key), just use the "Account information..." button.

three hints on using juhu.

1. your personal key is not your password

when you start juhu for the first time, you will be prompted to enter your jaiku screen name and your personal key. the personal key is different from your password, but bound to your account. in order to get it, you have to log into jaiku and go to http://api.jaiku.com/ using your browser. on this page you can find your key which is what you need to enter in the field Personal Key.2. use the plus

the plus symbol in the titlebar switches between small and big mode.

3. take a look at the preferences

there are some things you can costumize - like sounds, start on log in and so on. just click the tool icon.
